All components that can produce self-inductance are called inductors. Usually inductance is composed of coils, so it is also called inductance coil. It is represented by the letter "L" and its basic unit is Henry "H". Commonly used units are mH, μH, etc. Like a capacitor, an inductance is also an energy storage element, which has the functions of coupling, filtering, blocking, compensation, and tuning in the circuit.
Classification of inductance
According to whether the inductance changes, it can be divided into: fixed inductance, fine-tuning inductance, variable inductance, etc.
According to the magnetic properties, it can be divided into: air core coil, magnetic core coil, copper core coil and so on.

The main performance parameters of the inductor
Nominal inductance
The nominal inductance is a physical quantity that reflects the self-induction capability of the inductor. The size of the inductance is related to the shape, structure and material of the coil. The actual inductance is usually mH, μH as the unit.
Quality factor
In an inductance coil, the ratio of stored energy to energy consumed is called the quality factor, also known as the Q value, which is specifically expressed as the ratio of the coil's inductive reactance (ωL) to the coil's loss resistance (R). The increase in frequency will reduce the Q value, and in severe cases, it will destroy the normal operation of the circuit.
Rated current
The rated current is the maximum current allowed to pass in the inductor, and the size of the rated current is related to the diameter of the winding coil. Domestic color code inductors usually use the method of printing letters on the inductor body to indicate the maximum DC working current. The letters A, B, C, D, and E indicate the maximum working current is 50mA, 150mA, 300mA, 700mA, 1600mA, respectively.
Distributed capacitance
The distributed capacitance of the inductor coil refers to the capacitance effect formed between the turns of the coil. The effect of these capacitors can be seen as an equivalent capacitor connected in parallel with the coil. At low frequencies, the distributed capacitance has no effect on the work of the inductor; at high frequencies, it will change the performance of the inductor.
DC resistance of the inductor
It is the DC loss resistance R of the inductor coil, which can be directly measured with the ohm block of a multimeter.
Inductance identification method
The identification method of inductance is similar to resistance and capacitance, and there are also direct marking method, text symbol method and color marking method. (Reference: Capacitor identification method)
Inductance detection method
The performance test of inductance generally adopts the method of appearance inspection combined with multimeter test. Check the appearance first to see if the coil is broken or burnt (this kind of malfunction is more common), if there is no such phenomenon, then use a multimeter to check. If the measured resistance of the coil is much larger than the nominal value or tends to infinity, it means that the inductor is open; if the measured resistance of the coil is much lower than the nominal value, it means that there is a short-circuit fault inside the coil.
